Highlights

Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks is comprised of five distinct mountain ranges: the Organ, Doña Ana, Sierra de las Uvas, Robledo, and Potrillo Mountains, as well as the Potrillo Volcanic Field. This vast and diverse landscape is also characterized by a patchwork of Chihuahuan desert expanses and includes deep canyons, riparian forests, volcanic craters, and fumaroles, as well as towering sky island mountain peaks.

Within this expanse lies one of the most significant collections of prehistoric sites in the American Southwest, including petroglyphs, ruins, and cave dwellings, which can be traced back thousands of years to the earliest inhabitants of the region. Renowned figures and places from North American history, such as Geronimo, Billy the Kid, the Butterfield Overland Mail stagecoach route, the Gadsden Purchase boundary, and the Apollo astronauts have left their legacies at sites within the monument.

How has Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument benefitted your business directly?

My father and grandfather are known in the region for their photographs of the Organ Mountains. These iconic images are on the walls of homes and offices all over the state and the country. My father’s photographs capture the beauty that everyone who lives here gets to enjoy every day. Our business offers magnets, calendars, greeting cards, and wall hangings for locals and visitors alike to have so they can enjoy our monument wherever they are and live. As one of the original businesses to lift up the monument, we are the place to go if you want beautiful images of our monument.

How does Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument benefit the local community and the state of New Mexico?

Las Cruces is known throughout the country as the home of the Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks National Monument (OMDP). We have seen visitation to OMDP triple since its designation and that means more people staying in our hotels, eating at our restaurants, and shopping in our stores. This revenue comes back into and circulates through our economy, supporting local jobs and businesses. Having the national monument in our community has been an immense benefit not only for our local economy but for the growing industry of outdoor recreation.
